Some favourite islands...

Small and intimate

Angaga is a small, very pretty island with a lively and varied house reef that's easily accessible from the beach so is wonderful for snorkelling. This is a quiet and relaxed, no-news-no-shoes island that will suit couples and young families. The sunset bar built on stilts over the water is one of our favourite spots, plus there's a beach-front bar that serves snacks as an alternative to the main buffet restaurant. Beach villas are detached, with  three two-storey family villas, and the water villas have glass bottom tables to view the fish below.

Luxury All Inclusive

Kanifushi is a five-star resort offering a stunning lagoon, fantastic facilities and a great-value All Inclusive plan that includes buffet or a la carte dining and a range of  wines, branded spirits, cocktails and well-stocked minibar. A 30-minute seaplane flight takes you to this lush 2km-long island in Lhaviyani atoll, which has particularly spacious beach villas (take up to 3 adults + 1 child) and family villas. Gym, tennis courts, kids' club and non-motorised watersports are free, as are daily snorkelling trips to nearby reefs. There are two pools, one adults only, and the range of restaurants includes the excellent vegetarian Just Veg.

Fantastic for families

Bandos on North Male Atoll is one of the largest and longest established Maldives holiday resorts. Only 15 minutes from the airport by speedboat, it offers beautiful beaches, excellent snorkelling on the house reef and is extremely child-friendly, with family-sized rooms available, a kids' club and kids' menus. It has a beautiful pool with a swim-up bar and great sports facilities. We especially like the double-storey Jacuzzi Beach Villas.

Romantic escape

Baros is a tiny island just 25 minutes from the airport by speedboat yet offers a fabulous romantic escape, with no children under 8 allowed to maintain the peaceful atmosphere. There's a range of elegant beach and water villas, many with their own pools, and choice of beautifully-set restaurants including the stunning over-water Lighthouse and Asian-influenced Lime, an idyllic spot for lunch overlooking the infinity pool and turquoise lagoon. The resident Marine Biologist is on hand to guide you around the spectacular house reef.

Simple and stunning

Our first ever Maldives holiday was taken here and it's where we fell in love with these magical islands. Eriyadu is a small, friendly, back-to-basics resort; you won't find plasma TVs, personal butlers, swimming pools or Jacuzzis, but its beaches, lagoon and house reef are stunning and it has a traditional Maldivian charm, plus it's one of the most reasonably-priced resorts. There are no water villas or sea walls around this tiny island so there are breathtaking views wherever you look.

Love the villas and reef!

We loved the luxurious villas at Furaveri, a medium-size island in the northern Raa atoll - and then we snorkelled the reef and were blown away! An easy swim from the beach or your water villa, it's one of the liveliest house reefs we've seen, swarming with fish and several sharks. The garden villas can be interconnecting for families, while the beachfront villas, many with private pools, are detached - the Dhoni Pool Villas are inspired by the design of traditional Maldivan boats. There's a large pool, a kids' club, tennis, gym and selection of restaurants, one featuring Asian specialities and another with a Mexican theme - Margaritas by the beach, anyone?

Splendid isolation

If you are looking for space, privacy and laid-back luxury, you will find it at Hideaway Beach, which has some of the largest villas in Maldives, most with their own pools.  A 1.5km long island in the northern Haa Alif Atoll, it has the ideal combination of turquoise lagoon and unusual double coral reef for outstanding snorkelling  With only 103 villas on this large island, there is plenty of space for strolling or cycling, and there are four restaurants and bars, two pools, spa, sports centre, tennis academy with resident professional and kids' club with free babysitting.

All inclusive - and manta rays!

Hanifaru Bay, a protected marine reserve in Baa Atoll, is one of the most famous places in the world to see manta rays, as the magnificent creatures gather here in their hundreds to feast on the plankton that accumulates between around May-November. Snorkelling amongst these harmless and inquisitive giants is one of our most magical memories, and the lush island of Kihaa is the closest resort to the site, where you may also spot gigantic whale sharks. Even out of manta season, Kihaa is a tranquil gem, offering an all inclusive meal plan, easily accessible house reef, sparkling lagoon and spacious thatched villas, all large enough for two adults and two children. There are two lovely pools - one infinity - a small kids' club, sports facilities and an overwater spa.

Idyllic adults-only

One of the few resorts in Maldives for over 18s only, Komandoo is ideal for couples and honeymooners, with beautiful beaches, a stunning lagoon and wonderful coral reef for snorkelling just a few steps from your detached beach or water villa. Relaxed and unpretentious, Komandoo has two restaurants: Falhu with traditional sand floor and thatched roof, or the spectacular Aqua, built over the ocean with glass floors. There are also two bars, one on the beach and the other overlooking the infinity pool. With an excellent All Inclusive plan on offer, Komandoo is incredibly popular, so book early!

Lots to do and turtles!

If you're at all worried about being bored in Maldives, the large island of Kuredu has a huge range of activities from watersports to a full-size football pitch and a golf course! There's evening entertainment if you want it, but also quieter bars to escape to if you don't, plus a choice of restaurants. Kuredu has 3.5km of stunning white beach, including a wonderful sandbank where baby rays and sharks like to practise their swimming. There's also an area of seagrass where you're almost guaranteed to see large turtles. The water villas have their own adults-only pool and restaurant.

Stylish and secluded

There are just  20 beach villas and 30 water villas on the tiny island of Milaidhoo, set in the UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, 35 minutes by seaplane from Male. Contemporary but still authentically Maldivian in style, each airy thatched-roof villa opens out to a large outdoor living space with a glamorous canopied daybed and your own private infinity pool. An excellent house reef encircles the island, there's a stunning over-water spa and yoga pavilion and three restaurants - the a la carte beachfront Oceans, the Shoreline Grill where you can dine barefoot on the sand, and the gourmet Ba'theli, set on a boat in the turquoise lagoon.  Milaidhoo only accepts guests nine and over.

Spectacular coral reef

A 30-minute seaplane or domestic flight takes you to this tiny gem of an island, just 350m by 50m, in the South Ari atoll. A true barefoot paradise and a favourite with divers, top-class Mirihi is renowned for both its spectacular house reef and exceptional personal service. The fitness centre, windsurfing, canoes and snorkelling equipment are all complimentary - and you'll need the exercise to work off the delicious food served in the Dhonveli buffet restaurant or the over-water Muraka, the perfect setting for a romantic meal.

Your own stretch of beach

Each of Nika's pretty thatched beach villas have their own private stretch of beach, each with a Jacuzzi, hammock and dining table, just steps from the water's edge and the lovely reef beyond. Most are also spacious enough for a family of four, while the two-bedroom Family Villas sleep six. There are also Water Villas with split-level sun-decks and Family Water Villas. Situated in the North Ari atoll, around 25 minutes by seaplane from Male, the island has many great dive sites within easy reach. The main open-air restaurant has the traditional sand floor, while the beach bar is just the place for sunset cocktails.

All Inclusive & great house reef

Small, traditional Maldivan island, ultra-modern villas, great house reef and all-inclusive - the newly refurbished OBLU by Atmosphere at Helengeli ticks all the boxes! With a famous house reef and channel either side of the island, Helengeli used to be known as a divers' paradise with basic accommodation. Now rebuilt as a four-star resort, Helengeli still offers a fabulous underwater experience but has bright, contemporary villas with open-air bathrooms, two beachside pools - one adults-only - a spa, complimentary watersports and two restaurants. It's 50 minutes by speedboat from Male.

Laid-back luxury

In the far south of Maldives, almost touching the Equator, lies the remote Gaafu Dhaalu atoll and the exquisite little five-star island of Outrigger Konotta where unpretentious luxury meets authentic Maldivian style. There are just 53 beach and water villas, all very spacious and secluded and with their own private pools. The shallow, sandy lagoon is excellent for swimming while just beyond lies a lovely house reef - there are guided snorkelling tours daily to help you spot the myriad of sealife, or you can navigate the reef without getting wet in the island's mini-submarine! All meals are a la carte, with indoor and outdoor dining, there's a kids' club and a comprehensive All Inclusive package available.

Stunning sandbank

It can be hard in Maldives to find rooms large enough to accommodate families, so Palm Beach is a real find as almost all room types will fit in two adults plus two children, with the two-storey Villas offering privacy for grown-ups. With only 138 rooms on this 2km-long island, there's lots of space between rooms and on the beach, which stretches out to a beautiful sandbank at the beach bar end of the island, surrounded by a shallow, crystal-clear lagoon. The main restaurant serves a top-quality, Italian-influenced buffet, and there's a beach-side a la carte  restaurant. Add great free sports facilities, including bicycles, and Palm Beach offers excellent value with chic style.

Natural beauty
A medium-sized, naturally beautiful island with plentiful palms, sandy paths and wide, talcum-soft beaches, Reethi (which means pretty in the Maldivian language) has a casual, friendly atmosphere that has the mostly European guests who’ve discovered it returning year after year. It has a choice of buffet and a la carte restaurants, including the beach-side Reethi Grill and the Moodhu on stilts over the ocean, and as well as the main bar there are three smaller watering-holes dotted around the beach or hidden amongst the palms. Tucked away in the middle of the island is a sports complex with tennis courts, and the house reef, just a short swim from the shore, is one of the ‘fishiest’ we’ve seen!
Luxury & great food

A 45-minute seaplane flight to the remote northern Noonu Atoll, Iru Fushi is a fairly large resort, at 52 acres, with excellent service and top-notch facilities for adults and children. There are a variety of luxurious villas tucked away amongst the palm trees or over the ocean, many with private pools. All are large enough for 2 adults and 2 children, with some able to be divided into two separate areas.  Couples will find privacy and seclusion, while families will love the 'jungle' pool with islands and waterfall, excellent kids' club and great-value 'kids stay and eat free' deal.

A hidden gem in South Ari

The small, perfectly-formed island of Vakarufalhi – affectionately known as Vakaru – is blessed with gorgeous beaches, a stunning lagoon for swimming and a superb house reef that encircles the entire island. In the South Ari atoll, around 35 minutes by seaplane from Male, it's perfectly placed for spotting manta rays and whale sharks year-round. A perfect combination of rustic simplicity and understated luxury, four-star Vakaru is a no-news-no-shoes escape, with a wonderful feeling of isolation. The food at the buffet restaurant is fantastic, especially the desserts!

Fabulous snorkelling

This 900m-long island in the South Ari Atoll, just 25 minutes from the airport by seaplane, has an excellent house reef very close to shore so fantastic snorkelling is on your doorstep. There are villas on the beach or over-water, and a choice of buffet or a la carte restaurants. The island caters well for both families and couples, with a family pool and playground for kids while other facilities, including another pool and some bars and restaurants, are for adults only. The All Inclusive Plus plan is great value, including the mini-bar, sports, kayaks and windsurfers.
